ChineseBites and Western Lake 西湖海鮮酒家

On August 15 the restaurant of the ChineseBites tour was Western Lake Seafood Located on Victoria and 33rd of Vancouver. I was joined by Raymond, Sherman, RickGrace, Melody, Diane, and Alvin in tasting Western Lake’s seafood menu.

We started out our dinner with Winter Melon Soup served in this very sophisticated golden egg bowl. It created quite a bit of attention with other tables as it was definitely a big center piece of the group.Inside this golden bowl was half a hallowed out winter melon with various pieces of pork, chicken, and crab. The soup was very clear and delicious, not to salty too. The serving was very generous as it was able to fill about 16 full bowls of soup. read more »

Iögo Launch Party #iogoVIP

Ultima Foods has launched a new yogurt brand at the last week of August, iögo (pronounced yo-go), uses no artificial colours or flavours and is made in Canada. It’s hard to not notice the two dots over loads of advertisements around Vancouver, especially with all the free samples around skytrain stations!

I had a chance to attend their launch party on the last week of August to sample their yogurts and foods cooked with yogurt!

iögo has over 7 verities of yogurt catered to all kinds of people with over 40 different flavours. At the launch party, I had a chance to samples some of varieties of yogurt like the zip, nano and nomad.

The bartender at this event had a feature drink with their nano that was mixed with vodka! Who would have thought vodka and yogurt went well together? The sweetness of the yogurt and fruit toned down the vodka making it a perfect way of mixing an adult yogurt drink. read more »

Spice Islands Indonesian Restaurant (Dunbar & 41st Ave, Vancouver)

Spice Islands Indonesian is a very unique restaurant, in many ways. From their strange out of the place location at Dunbar & 41st, to being one of the few Indonesian restaurants in town, they are highly overlooked and unnoticed.  Well, that’s what I thought from how busy it was when we were there. We arrived at 630pm and left at around 930pm, and the whole time we were there only three other tables were occupied.

First impression, the place is small!  Once you open up the menu and take in the surroundings such as the table setting and etc, you realize this is a little bit more fancy than originally thought.

Spice Island Indonesian Restaurant

Our server, Rod, was very friendly and basically talked us through the menu. First off, he asked for our preferred spice level, which I thought was very thoughtful.  Not everyone can eat spicy, and even the “mild” for Indonesians would probably be a “hot spicy” for Canadians.  Together, we agreed on slightly spicy, but he said that he would make one super spicy just to surprise us.  I was hoping it wouldn’t be dessert.

Descriptions are cp’d directly from their menu online.

Gado Gado – Indonesian salad
The most popular and most varied salad in Indonesia, consisting of tossed mixed vegetables and a spiced peanut sauce
Small $8 Large $10

Mmm light and peanuty to start the night.

Spice Island Indonesian Restaurant-3

Satay
Meat skewers marinated using a special house recipe and grilled over an open flame
Beef, chicken, or pork (min. six) $1.60/skewer

Very juicy and not overcooked, much appreciated. The peanut sauce was slightly chunky, I like that.

Nuba (Hastings & Cambie)

After Angie, Ben, Ed & I had finished eating at La Taqueria and were standing outside, I contemplated something that had been on my mind the whole time. Should I dare ask if they wanted to go for MORE food? “They’re foodies, of course they wouldn’t refuse..they just can’t!” I thought. With Nuba just a stones throw away, I asked if they wanted to go for something famous and well known.  It took very little convincing once I mentioned those key words, “famous” and “well known”. The item in question would be Fried Cauliflower, as mentioned on the list, 101 Things To Taste Before You Die presented by Vancouver Magazine.

Nuba-0686

Right at the North West corner of Hastings & Cambie, nuba is located underground. Though it would seem to be dark because of it being underground, on this particularly sunny but cold afternoon, the sun spilled in through the windows and gave it a great feel and ambiance.

Nuba-0688

See the 3rd item on the menu, Najib’s Special? This is is what we were here for, crispy cauliflower. Kind of strange when you think about it, this is what the restaurant is famous for, deep fried cauliflower?  read more »

$1.99 Happy Meals @ McDonald (Knight & 57th, Vancouver)

This is waaaay out of my usual chronological order of posting, but it’s time sensitive so it’s going up now!

So, the McDonalds at Knight & 57th Ave in Vancouver recently finished their renovations, and to bring in some traffic, they’ve been holding week long specials.

Knight & 57th McDonald's

This is the last special they’re running, $1.99 Happy Meals, only until December 20th. I had dropped by last week to get some $0.69 Cheeseburgers after school, and I saw a table that had 10 wrappers..in all 4 seats! That kind of stuff just makes my stomach queasy. I ate 3 and was feeling kind of blah.

Knight & 57th McDonald's

Although I had no problems ordering the cheeseburgers last week, I was a little more hesitant to order the Happy Meal. Afterall, it’s usually for kids, right? Then again, who says you can put an age limit on happiness? read more »

La Taqueria X3

This is the 3rd time I am posting about La Taqueria. Overkill? Probably, but I just had to try all of their different taco toppings. That’s how dedicated I am to you all, trying a restaurants entire menu!

Actually, that’s not true, they have quesadillas for $4. Maybe I can make it 4 times? hehe..

So I arranged to meet up with Ed (of EdEdition), Ben (of Chowtimes) and Angie (of Seasaltwithfood) for lunch one Thursday afternoon. Ed was late, as per usual…=p.

La Taqueria_0209

While waiting for Ed to find parking, Ben & I stood outside chatting since our last meeting we had at The Alibi Room. There was a lineup inside, but miraculously when Angie showed up, it had mostly cleared out and we had the prime seats right at the counter. read more »

Fried Chicken Fridays @ Fuel Restaurant

If you’re up to date with any of Vancouver’s food industry, you should know by now that Fuel on W4th is closing at the end of this month, Nov 29th to be exact.

Our 3 year anniversary is fast approaching and we have truly enjoyed the time we have had taking care of you all.  Our ultimate goal is to see you all more often, and in order to achieve that, we have decided to make a significant change to our landscape here at Fuel.

Sunday November 29th will be our last service as Fuel Restaurant. We will close for two days and re-open for business on December 2nd as a neighborhood restaurant and bar specializing in Casual Northwest Cuisine. Our philosophy towards quality ingredients and impeccable service will remain paramount. We simply want to offer these things to you at a more affordable price.

Not caught up with the food indutstry? Well may I suggest you read the following sites… Scout Magazine, UrbanDiner, Kitsilano and Edible British Columbia. Local foodie Karen of TinyBites has also posted about 3 things she’ll miss about Fuel.  Come back when you finish reading, mmkay? Please?

With a rare 5 day long weekend thanks to Remembrance day last week, I knew it would be my only chance to try the Fried Chicken Fridays @ Fuel.

Fuel’s Fried Chicken Fridays is a $19.50 combo that includes 3 pieces of buttermilk battered chicken, coleslaw, a biscuit, housemade gravy, and a choice of R&B Lager or Pale Ale.

I arrived shortly after 12pm, and I almost didn’t get it! Now that would have sucked. I knew I should have phoned in to make a reservation since the amount of chicken prepared each week is limited, I kept putting it off, aka…I slept most of my days away. read more »

Location Thai Vancouver

Sawasdee Thai

Two weeks ago when summer was still here, we were lounging around in Kevins backyard pool. Since we had already made lunch, kevin suggested we go out for dinner elsewhere, and he took us to his favorite Thai restaurant. He kept mentioning that we were special because he didn’t take much people here. Think of this as me “blowing up your spot” Kevin.

Sawasdee Thai Restaurant-0087

Located on Main and 28th, this little restaurant with it’s bright green exterior shouldn’t be hard to miss. Other restaurants in the area include The Main, Splitz Grill, and Grub.  As a side note, these three I have yet to try out, and hopefully by me putting them down like this, I will remind myself to visit them.  Or you could take me… yea you, I see you reading this.

It’s always a nice sign when a restaurant proudly displays their awards right at their entrance.

Alibi Room

Those who know me in real life know that I love beer, and I will do almost anything for some.  Alibi Room has been in my radar for a while, since my birthday earlier this year (January) but I just never found an occasion or reason to go.  A couple weeks ago, I commented on Chowtimes post about Bens low tolerance for beer.  After e-mailing back and forth, we decided to meet at the Alibi Room to chat and have some beer.

Alibi Room-0012

I’m not 100% sure of this, but I think the menus change to reflect any changes in the beers available, be it from tap or bottle.  Typewritten on graph paper, there’s food, wine, on tap, and bottle.  On tap, a small beer is $4 and a large is $5.75 (except for the Storm Brewing Lambic Beer).  I didn’t try the Storm this time, but I’m definitely coming back to try again though.  I have a soft spot for Lambic Beer, as it’s different and distinct.  I even sat through a presentation at Eat! Vancouver earlier this year (read my Lambic Beer post)

Congee Noodle King

So the day after Green Lemongrass and my wisdom teeth extraction, I wanted congee. For obvious reasons, I could only eat mushy food so congee was top on that list.  Since I already visited the Congee Noodle House, I wanted to try the other congee restaurant I knew, Congee Noodle King.

Congee Noodle King-5205

The restaurant is located at the busy intersection of Joyce and Kingsway. No idea if there’s parking in the back, but finding free parking around the area shouldn’t be too difficult.
