Iögo Launch Party #iogoVIP

Ultima Foods has launched a new yogurt brand at the last week of August, iögo (pronounced yo-go), uses no artificial colours or flavours and is made in Canada. It’s hard to not notice the two dots over loads of advertisements around Vancouver, especially with all the free samples around skytrain stations!

I had a chance to attend their launch party on the last week of August to sample their yogurts and foods cooked with yogurt!

iögo has over 7 verities of yogurt catered to all kinds of people with over 40 different flavours. At the launch party, I had a chance to samples some of varieties of yogurt like the zip, nano and nomad.

The bartender at this event had a feature drink with their nano that was mixed with vodka! Who would have thought vodka and yogurt went well together? The sweetness of the yogurt and fruit toned down the vodka making it a perfect way of mixing an adult yogurt drink. read more »

Deacon’s Corner

Deacon’s Corner has been on my list since September, but I just never ended up going for so many reasons. Can’t wake up early enough on the weekend to go for breakfast, can’t go during school time, lazy and didn’t wan to drag some friends there, etc.  So when our APPK (Anatomy, Physiology, Pathologies & Kinesiology) teacher said that we would go for breakfast/early lunch for our last class with him, Deacon’s Corner was almost a no brainer.

This first picture of the entrance to Deacon’s was actually taken on September 11th. I took the picture knowing fully well that I would be back one day. I was in this area of Gastown/Railtown because Kevin and I were to meet Ben for some beer at The Alibi Room!

Deacons Corner-0013

Nearly my whole class walked over to Deacon’s for a late breakfast/lunch. Truth be told, it was my second breakfast cause I just can’t start the day without food. I would die before I make it to school if I didn’t eat… read more »

Nuba (Hastings & Cambie)

After Angie, Ben, Ed & I had finished eating at La Taqueria and were standing outside, I contemplated something that had been on my mind the whole time. Should I dare ask if they wanted to go for MORE food? “They’re foodies, of course they wouldn’t refuse..they just can’t!” I thought. With Nuba just a stones throw away, I asked if they wanted to go for something famous and well known.  It took very little convincing once I mentioned those key words, “famous” and “well known”. The item in question would be Fried Cauliflower, as mentioned on the list, 101 Things To Taste Before You Die presented by Vancouver Magazine.

Nuba-0686

Right at the North West corner of Hastings & Cambie, nuba is located underground. Though it would seem to be dark because of it being underground, on this particularly sunny but cold afternoon, the sun spilled in through the windows and gave it a great feel and ambiance.

See the 3rd item on the menu, Najib’s Special? This is is what we were here for, crispy cauliflower. Kind of strange when you think about it, this is what the restaurant is famous for, deep fried cauliflower?  read more »

La Taqueria X3

This is the 3rd time I am posting about La Taqueria. Overkill? Probably, but I just had to try all of their different taco toppings. That’s how dedicated I am to you all, trying a restaurants entire menu!

Actually, that’s not true, they have quesadillas for $4. Maybe I can make it 4 times? hehe..

So I arranged to meet up with Ed (of EdEdition), Ben (of Chowtimes) and Angie (of Seasaltwithfood) for lunch one Thursday afternoon. Ed was late, as per usual…=p.

La Taqueria_0209

While waiting for Ed to find parking, Ben & I stood outside chatting since our last meeting we had at The Alibi Room. There was a lineup inside, but miraculously when Angie showed up, it had mostly cleared out and we had the prime seats right at the counter. read more »

Brioche – Urban Baking and Catering

Everyday, I walk past Brioche, be it their main entrance in the alley, or their “back entrance” on Water St.  I’m not much of a cafe & pastries kind of guy, if you can’t tell by now, but I had a little push from someone.  Anita, who came out to the Long Table Series @ The Irish Heather, asked if I had tried out Brioche when I posted about So.Cial.

Oh wait, the comment wasn’t on the actual post, but rather the imported post to the 604 Foodtography FB Fan Page (Are you a fan yet? If not, why not!)
Anita now has started writing her very own food blog, La Petite Foodie, which is not to be confused with La Petite Vancouver…(what happened to you Wilson?).

The main entrance is just before Cordova St. turns off into the alley where the So.Cial Butchershop & Deli is located.

Brioche-0643

I already had lunch, so I wasn’t looking for a meal, but a little snack and maybe a drink. Inside, it’s small and cozy, and has an almost Parisian cafe feeling. Not that I would know from first hand experience, but based on pictures….yea I’d say it’s pretty close.

Brioche-0631

Standing in the line up to order, I was at a complete loss as to what I should order or try out. Pastry? Buns? Sweets? Cake? So many choices… read more »

Revel Room

I thought that being in Gastown everyday for school would mean I would try out as many places as possible, but I actually haven’t. For many reasons, such as dodgeball, clinic, too tired, errands, no money, etc, I haven’t gone to as many restaurants as I thought I would have. Oh well. At least I’m very familiar with the neighbourhood now.

So, before the Monday Playoffs for VDL, my team had a dinner just to talk about strategy and etc. Originally we had planned to go to Nuba (I did go a couple weeks later, post pending…), but no reservations were made and they get really busy..so I had to quickly think of another place to go to. I’ve been looking at Revel Room for a while now, so I gave them a call. Yes, they had space!

To start off, I had a Red Truck Lager while we waited for the latecomers.

Revel Room-2

Tyson and I shared a plate of Lamb Samosas – shredded lamb with pistachios & currants, drizzled with garlic tahini, arugula & fennel salad ($10). It was more like lamb in spring roll skins, but they were yummy to munch on.

MoMo Sushi

Went for lunch with some classmates. I’m currently at VSBM for the Spa Therapy Program. It’s been an awesome experience so far, even though it is pretty intense as it’s 40hr weeks. When I finish at the end of January, I’ll be a certified bodyworker / massage practitioner. From then, I’ll look towards going to school either at Utopia Academy or WCCMT to further my education and get the RMT certification. Really, it’s only necessary in BC for insurance/claiming purposes, but might as well do it cause I’m really enjoying what I learn right now.

Anyways, that’s just a little bit more about me that’s not included in the About page. So we went to MoMo Sushi, which is a short walk from our school. Line up was nuts while waiting

MoMo Sushi-1486

Though for our party of 6, a table quickly cleared up and was available. Yay.

MoMo Sushi-1487

4 of us ordered combos, and the others ordered individual items. The salad and miso soup come with the combos.

Long Table Series @ The Irish Heather

So another food blogger meet up in Vancouver, and this time so graciously organized by Kim from I’m Only Here For The Food, we met at The Irish Heather for the wildly popular Long Table Series. This was perfect for me, as I am in Gastown for school and wouldn’t have to wait long after I was off to eat dinner.

Irish Heather LTS-1030

I was walking around the block just before 6 when I spotted Kim walking towards me. We walked in together and he told me to keep going, and then mentioned that I should take a picture of the long table before the dinner. Totally forgot that he had gone and blogged about his experience already.

So.Cial Custom Butcher Shop and Deli

I would put a street view map from Google, but it doesn’t do a good job of showing the outside of this deli. This butcher shop and deli is part of So.Cial at Le Magasin. You can walk through the alley that branches off from the intersection of Cordova St. and Homer, or you can walk through from the front on Water St.

So.Cial at Le Magasin-0542

I first read about So.Cial from Noshwell, when they posted about their experience back on June 18, 2008. That summer, I was working downtown full time and so stopped by after work to get myself a late lunch. Arriving just past 1, the place was full of people still, many sitting at the bar by the window. It’s funny, because back then I hadn’t even started blogging or taking pictures, let alone thinking about it, and now look where I am.

La Taqueria X2

Remember  I said in my first post about La Taqueria that I already went back? Here it is!

De Picadillo (sauteed ground tofu in chin chin’s secret recipe). This really didn’t taste like tofu, nor did it have the texture. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought I was eating ground pork!

La Taqueria-0551

De Lengua (braised pemberton meadows beef tongue). How strange, at first glance I thought this was just a cut up steak. Then I had to visualize how big a cows tongue would be. It must be huge. The texture is….really soft, almost buttery, but still steak like. If you can taste it already in your mouth, then yea you’re on the right track.
