Serious Pie (Downtown Seattle)

Val and I made a short weekend trip to Seattle at the end of September to do some shopping and eating, something of which I rarely do outside of the Vancouver area. As such, I had to do some research and crowd sourcing of where to eat, and came up with a LOT of suggestions. I of course had to pare it down, and eventually I decided on Serious Pie.

Serious Pie (Downtown Seattle)

For one reason, I was really craving pizza and the second reason being that I wanted something that would be more casual, as many of the suggested restaurants were fancy sit down pair with wine types. So after finding parking in the area, Val and I waited for 30 minutes, of which I was sorely tempted to just go right on over to the Dahlia Lounge next door.

I couldn’t resist ordering a pint of elliott bay brewing 3.14 ale for $6. Just a regular ale, I can’t remember much from it, but it’s the name that gets me, and apparently it’s also brewed exclusively for the restaurant.  read more »

Taqueria El Rinconsito, SeaTac, Washington

I went to Mexico recently with my parents, and since we were flying out from SeaTac, I looked for places to eat nearby our hotel. What better way than to kickstart the upcoming Mexican eats with a Taqueria? Reviews looked good on Google and Yelp and it was a short 2 minute drive away, so we had an early dinner before calling it a night for our 5am flight.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

Located in a small strip mall off the busy highway like street [or is it a freeway?] the interior of this recently opened Taqueria El Rinconsito is very clean and expansive. You order at the counter, and they punch it in the system and also call it out to the kitchen through the microphone.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

My dad ordered Menudo, a traditional Mexican soup made with hominy and tripe, offered on Saturday and Sunday only for $8.99. Includes tortillas.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

Typically made with beef stomach, it takes a lot of time and labour for this soup. Other additions such as tripe, honeycomb, tendon, and even beef feet can be added. Spices such as onions, cilantro, oregano and chili flakes can be added as well for more flavour.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

My mom ordered Arroz Con Pollo ($8.69) which also includes tortillas. The Mexican version of Arroz Con Pollo is heavy on sauce, which she asked to be omitted for this order, while the Costa Rican way, or at least the way my mom makes it, is more like fried rice, with very liberal use of achiote to give it a deep red colour and distinctive flavour.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

I ordered 3 Carnitas Tacos for $3.36, and I think I had the most filling meal. Beside the cashier, there’s a self serve condiment/salsa bar, and I took advantage of it. Salsa? Cabbage salad? Pickled vegetables and jalapenos? Limes? I’ll take them all! Coming in at just over $1 each, I may never look at La Taqueria or Dona Cata the same way..until I crave some tacos.

Taqueria El Rinconsito

It’s a bit funny and sad at the same time that these were the best tacos I ate during my trip, even when I was in Mazatlan. It’s probably due to the fact that we had more seafood [ie, ceviche, clams, calamari, lobster, fish, etc] and not that much “typical” Mexican food while there, but on our way back to Vancouver, we made one last stop to Taqeuria el Rinconsito for some cheap and delicious tacos.

Boomer’s Drive In – Bellingham, Washington

Burgers. They’re the best. If it’s tastes pretty decent, fills you up, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, it’s even better! While the best example in the Lower Mainland that I can come up with is Burger Burger, there’s another option right across the border … Boomer’s Drive-In in Bellingham!

Boomer's Drive-In (Bellingham, WA)-01.jpg

As the name states, Boomer’s is a drive-in burger joint that also has an old school feel. I had been eyeing this place for about two years but was always vetoed whenever I was in the area. However during the summer, I made about 3 trips to the Bellingham Airport. Since I was the driver all 3 times, that meant 3 visits to Boomer’s! (One trip included a Boomer combos followed by a 5 Guys burger … that was a good idea at the time).

Getting there isn’t too bad. In fact, it takes less time to get there than what Google Maps says as long as you’re not stuck in rush hour. It’s about 5 minutes south of Bellis Fair and two blocks away from the off-ramp for Exit 252.

For my first two visits, I went with the drive-in option. Just park your car, turn on your headlights and a server will come out and take your order. After your food is ready, your order is placed on a tray that clamps on to your window. No movement necessary! In fact, the only time I had to move was to was adjust my seat back so my stomach could have more room! read more »

American Burgers Cuisine Las Vegas Location Nevada Type United States of America

In-N-Out Burger (2900 West Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas, NV, USA)

Famous In-N-Out Burger. It embodies and defines the American fascination and romance with burger, fries and fast food. The perfect trifecta, if you will. It also has the distinction of being purely a West Coast thing, like how White Castle is purely an East Coast thing.

In-N-Out Burger (2900 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas)

I don’t make many trips down to the states, and the times I do it’s rare I pass the Washington state border. As such, I’ve never had the chance to experience In-N-Out in California, like many of my friends have, who all come back RAVING about the burger and fries.

In-N-Out Burger (2900 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas)

It was a long awaited dodgeball tournament (yes, frigging. dodgeball. tournament) this August in Las Vegas that gave me an opportunity to finally get a taste of this famed burger. I did a little research, reading about the history, recommendations on the menu, and of course their not-so-secret secret menu.

With luck, the gym we were playing our tournament at was right by an In-N-Out. Well, right by is a stretch, as we still had a bit of a walk along the highway. Damn America, you and your ridiculous use of land.

3rd Annual Taste of Tulalip Tweet-Up

What, isn’t this blog 604 Foodtography, not 360 Foodtography (area code for Tulalip/Seattle)? Well, yes, but when the invitations in my inbox have a menu that includes stuff like Dungeness Crab Pot Pie, Wagyu New York Strip, Braised Oxtail, Applewood Smoked Pork Belly..it’s very hard to ignore. Now all I had to do was find a way to get down to Tulalip from Vancouver. The sweet offer of free food & wine in exchange for a ride was enough incentive for Jay, border crossing be damned.

Now I’ve been to Tulalip a bunch of times, but never to the Resort/Casino, only for the Premium Outlet.  The resort / hotel side was pretty grand and very Pacific Northwestern with all the decorations.  Tulalip Resort Executive Chef Perry Mascitti introduced his team of chefs, each responsible for a different menu item that would be featured at Taste of Tulalip coming up in November 11-12th.
