Swallow Tail – Wild Foraging Tour: Mushrooms and Plants

Living in Vancouver means having an abundance of beautiful natural scenery practically at your doorstep. With so many parks mountains in the vicinity, I realized that I wasn’t taking advantage of any of it. So on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, I was invited to tag along on Swallow Tail’s foraging tour out in Lynn Headwaters to learn about the wild edibles in our area.

Chef Robin of Swallow Tail Canada commenced the afternoon with a walking tour by the BC Mills House. Within this tiny area alone, we were introduced to many different plants, roots, and berries that were edible - some of which I had never noticed on previous visits to the parks (ie. thimbleberry, currant, elderberry).

Burgoo Bistro – Lonsdale

Remember my post back in March about Zipang Sushi? That night I had originally planned to go to Burgoo Bistro on Main, but the 2 hour wait forced me to try out Zipang instead. I’m super glad the night turned out the way it had, but since then I haven’t thought about or had a chance to try Burgoo again. What the heck am I doing in North Van you might be wondering? Well I had a free advance screening ticket for Final Destination 3D at the Empire Esplanade..so might as well make the most out of the trip!

The menu is neat, everything they offer they put the originating country initial beside. Lots to satisfy any tastebud, there’s starters, salads, soups, fondues, sandwiches, classics and dessert. The menu is on their site if you’re thinking of visiting.

Since neither C or I were really hungry, we got two things to share. First was fondue..I liked the cheese, really full of flavour but the abundance of bread and less of the fruit was a slight disappointment. There was probably half an apple and a sprinkling of grapes and tomatoes.

($13 – Brie Fondue, roast garlic, honey, thyme and white wine served with red grapes, cut apple, grape tomatoes and crusty bread)

Beavertails – Grouse Mountain, Vancouver, BC

Hi all, the last time I posted was the end of July, almost 2 weeks now! Sorry, I’ve been trying to avoid the computer and any distractions because it is once again finals time.  I could have easily pre-written some posts, scheduled them to appear but I don’t like posting like that. There’s many reasons, such as I want time to reflect about the food, think about what I can write, waiting for Urbanspoon to add the restaurant, etc. Plus, it also doesn’t feel as personal to me, just seems like a machine churning out daily posts (no offense to anyone! really).  Yes, I know it doesn’t keep the readership up, but hey, I can survive a couple weeks.. I know you’re all faithful readers!

:)

Okay, so travel back in time with me back to the heatwave we had mid July. Yea, you’re probably all missing it right now aren’t you. The last couple days have been absolutely miserable. One Friday, July 17th 2009 to be exact, I went and did the Grouse Grind with Kevin, Jeff and Annie.  I’ve only done it twice before, both back in high school, just over an 1 hour each time.  The total length of the trail is only 2.8 kilometers, something that would take only 14min~ or so for me on flat land, but it’s the elevation gain of 853 meters that makes this so challenging.

Grouse Grind_3447

This is what you will see for nearly 90% of the trail. When you reach the 1/4 mark, you’ll think “ONLY?!” This time I took 1 hour and 30min because I stayed with Jeff, his first time and he hit the wall ..repeatedly. Oh and he fell once too. Can’t leave a buddy hanging, ya know?

So I’ve never had Beavertails, and Kevin was so excited for this, more so than doing the Grouse Grind itself.  I guess it’s like a reward, all that hard work and sweat you just put in, you’re very deserving of a deep fried delight. I’ve only been to Grouse a couple times in the winter for snowboarding, I avoid it cause it’s too touristy and expensive. Mount Seymour is cheaper and isn’t as busy. I’m rambling, I seem to have so much to say!

Wally’s Burgers at Cates Park/Whey-ah-Wichen

10am – 8pm Daily (open till October 15th)

Yes, you read the title right. It’s the reincarnation of Wally’s Burgers at Cates Park (North Vancouver).

I saw Sherman’s tweet about this a couple days ago, and so decided to act on it and go today for lunch.  I’ve had Wally’s once when I was younger and we used to live around the area but I honestly don’t remember much bout it..nor if it was good.

So yea, all foodies will go the distance for food…and I’m about 99% sure I saw KimHo when we went today. Why? ‘Cause I recognized the camera & lens (Nikon + 35mm), and who else would take a picture, arrange it, take another picture, hold it up, take a picture, and etc? Only another foodblogger like myself. If he ends up posting about Wally’s, then yes…it’s you! HAHA.

Anyways, it’s not hard to find, there’s a sign right underneath the park entrance, and another small sandwich board later on. Even the District of North Vancouver touts it on their site, link here. There’s two PDF’s you can view, one for the menu and one for a map of the location.

Gord Bemister, an ex-producer at CFUN radio, has purchased the rights to the name and the trademark menu items, and has reopened Wally’s Burger’s in Cates Park, North Vancouver.  But unlike the original, this won’t be the “one and only” Wally’s in town. Bemister is looking into opening several more outlets around the city, with the next site possibly in Gastown.

Will customers who loved the old Wally’s for its famous “Chuck Wagons” and shakes, not to mention the gravity defying Deluxe Combo Burger complete with wiener, fried egg and secret sauce, be able to indulge once again?  One thing’s for sure, the place won’t really be a Wally’s without the prodigious use of neon signage – both inside and outside the restaurant.

Well there are no neon signs sadly, but there is a big menu for you to peruse.
