Chinesebites and Ken’s Chinese Restaurant 南軒中西美食

With KiBo Restaurant & Lounge sandwiched in between Fatty Cow Seafood Hot Pot and this visit to Ken’s Chinese Restaurant, it was 3 weeks in a row that our little group went out to eat with ChineseBites.

Let me take you back in time, back to when this location used to be something completely different. Spot that Korean underneath? It’s a hint. This place used to be E-Hak Japanese, and it served up Japanese/Korean food, buffet style. I have faint memories of eating here with my family, but it’s obviously long gone. Now, it’s occupied by Ken Leung, who opened this location up in 2007.

Ken's Chinese Restaurant 南軒中西美食

We were here to try some of his award winning dishes, such as this lobster with konnyaku in clay pot.  Konnyaku (糸蒟蒻) if you’re infamiliar, is made from konjac, a type of tuber vegetable comprised mainly of water and fibre, and formed into bundled noodles. The lobster, cooked with plenty of ginger and green onion, was sweet and traditional. read more »

Hong Kong: Tsui Wah Restaurant – Lan Kwai Fong

I am currently in Hong Kong! Since I’ll be here for the next 5 months Kevin has asked me to write reviews of restaurants in Hong Kong. Although I don’t think this relates to any 604 posts (Hong Kong’s area code 852) most of the Travel Series will be snippets and will lead back to my travel blog. Hope these posts will help you when you head to Hong Kong. Enjoy!

This restaurant was recommended to us by one of our dorm mates, she said they served decent food and it was Cha Chang Tang style.

The place wasn’t too hard to find as they had GIANT NEON SIGNS gleaming everywhere.

Sensus Bistro

Honestly, there is no shortage of HK Style Cafe‘s in Metro Vancouver.  I don’t think I’ve heard or seen all of them, and it’s even more unlikely that I will eat at all of them either. One can try though right?

:)
Sounds like a formidable challenge.. Ed, do you want to try?

Sensus Bistro-10

The windows are tinted and frosted so from the outside, one has no idea of what goes on in there or to expect. Once you walk through the doors though, you’re greeted to a, surprisingly, very clean and modern interior.  Surprising because this is not something one comes to expect from a Chinese restaurant!

Sensus Bistro-09

Even the menus are fannnncy. There’s a lot of options to choose from, so I just went with something comfortable.. curry.

Each curry set meal comes with soup, bread, salad, steamed rice or spaghetti and a drink. You just pick what kind of meat you want, I had beef slices while my mom got chicken steak.

Curry King Cafe (Kingsway)

Following a dodgeball tournament, a couple of us were thinking of places to eat. I was really craving curry lamb, but didn’t want to drive to Richmond for various reasons. Since it was still somewhat early, being 10pm~, I knew that Curry King Cafe on Kingsway in Burnaby would still be open.

Now, with a name like Curry King, they better serve some damn good curry.  They do, sort of. Tina ordered their Mango Curry with Prawns.

Curry King Cafe-0713

Jeff as usual, ordered something with rice. Fried rice. He’s kind of like Ben‘s kids who always order fried rice…haha.

Curry King Cafe-0715

Caitlin ordered the Curry Chicken w/ Rice.

Curry King Cafe-0720

Kevin & I both got Green Curry Lamb w/ Rice. Look at how green this is! Does anyone know the difference between green curry, red curry and “regular” yellow curry? read more »

Bauhinia Restaurant

Mom didn’t want to cook dinner one night, so we went out to eat. I suggested Bauhinia because I’ve never been and didn’t want to go to other cha-chang-tings like Cattle Cafe, E-Canteen, Flo Tea Room, Cafe Gloucester, etc… apparently we used to go to Bauhinia a lot when I was younger.

You see the purple right in the middle of this map? Yep, that’s Bauhinia.

My first impression of Bauhinia is that they’re clean(er), and more upscale. That is reflected in their price, but also in what they offer. Now forgive me, I didn’t write down what was ordered nor did the receipt have it in English. Soooo..I’ll just describe it..

Deep fried sole filet w/ baked oyster, veggies & rice. Mom had this.

Pan fried sole filet w/ shrimp, veggies & rice. I had this.

So if you spent over a certain price point (I think it was $25? $30?) you got to draw a card from their box. This is what my mom took out..

Cafe Gloucester

Another summer day spent in Kevins pool, another dinner out. Sept 13th is still summer, yes it is! This time we went to Cafe Gloucester after the restaurant we originally intended to go to, Vanya, was closed when we got there (it was about 1030~ or so). Completely opposite directions, I know.

Celsius Cafe

When I first saw Wendy’s (Eat ‘n About) post about Celsius Cafe, I thought it looked like a decent place. Then I read Ben’s (Chowtimes) post and it made me worry a bit. Nonetheless, I still wanted to try it for myself.  We arrived late too, around 1030pm and for different time periods of the day, they have different specials. Check this picture from Wendy cause I didn’t take one.  Taking advantage of the last one, one free refill on any virgin bbt, most of us ordered a drink, but there’s some discrepancy about their definition. I’ll get to that later.

Celsius Cafe-5156

To start off, the service was pretty bad. The restaurant was not busy at all, we were the 2nd group in there, yet the waitress decided to sit down right behind us with her friends and ignore us. She didn’t even have her head up or looked in our direction from time to time, so I had to knock on the table to get her attention. Not off to a good start here… read more »

Cattle Cafe – Alexandra Road, Richmond

Cattle Cafe is relatively new, and I went with my mom one night for dinner. It is at the most Western end of Alexandra Road, and so most people probably wouldn’t go that direction.

Cattle Cafe-3278

Surprise, a Chinese restaurant that has a website! It’s not bad actually, check it out, www.cattlecafe.ca. The menu is on the site also, but could use some navigational work.

Flo Tea Room

What a horrible picture on my behalf, composition is totally wrong, but hey I was hungry after Ultimate practice and really wanted to go in and eat.

Flo Tea Room-3118

Flo Tea Room is another one of those Taiwanese/HK Style cafes that are found in abundance, especially within Richmond. The crowd here is mostly younger, but you do see families sometimes. The menu is very well laid out and it’s pretty. This page for the drinks looks like a clubbing poster..!

E-Canteen

E-Canteen on Urbanspoon

E-Canteen is one of those places I visit somewhat often, but never thought to blog about because there’s nothing really special about it.  After our ultimate game last Tuesday, I figured I might as well bring my camera if we were coming here to eat, just to get an entry out of it. Yes, I’m honest about it.

:)
E Canteen-1129

There are some rooms that seem like they were used for karaoke before. This one had leopard print inside….lol.

E Canteen-1134

Like a lot of typical HongKong style cafes, the prices are fair, and they have a very extensive menu. You can choose from the 1/2/3 item+soup & drink menu, the sizzling plates, curries, fried rice, noodles, snacks, etc. read more »
