It’s taken me an agonizingly long time to visit Guu Garlic on Robson. Inevitably, whenever I’m downtown looking for a place to eat, Guu Garlic always seems to come to mind. So, I’ll show up, wait in line for maybe 10 minutes and get frustrated and head elsewhere (usually Hapa Izakaya up the street).
On a cold Monday night, we ended up downtown after dodgeball and luckily enough, 10:30pm is late enough to miss the crowds, but still early enough to get in. It probably has to do with it being a Monday night as well and after the Halloween weekend.
From the fresh sheet, I had to order the Kimchi Natto Cold Tofu $3.80. I’ve never had natto before, so I thought this would be a way to ease myself into this strange sticky japanese delicacy. Mixed in with the tofu and kimchi, it was totally fine. Picking out small amounts of the bean itself, totally okay. In large amounts, not as okay as it triggered a mini gag response. The taste of natto itself wasn’t as pungent as I thought, and I definitely think I could stomach it with rice for breakfast.
Also from the fresh sheet, Val ordered the Seared Salmon Belly Salad $7.80. Easy enough to make, this was not that great since the piece of salmon we received was tough, as evidenced by the difficulty the cook had in removing the skin.
I think this is from the regular menu, Beef Tongue – grilled with garlic butter soy sauce & garlic chips $5.80.
Not bad at all Guu..now to conquer the waits at the original Guu on Thurlow.
