I remember passing by the Farmers Market at Trout Lake on Saturdays and walking from stall to stall admiring the colorful displays of groceries. You can always be sure that summer is in full force when the signs for fresh fruit, fish, bread, honey, cheese, and all sorts of other delectables come together at the Vancouver Farmers Market.
2 weeks ago, I had a chance to drop by the Main St. location (they are set up right in the park on Wednesdays from 3-7pm) to learn about the vendors and their goodies.
There were 2 food trucks present: Blue Smoke BBQ (that’s their brisket sandwich above) and Off the Wagon tacos.
As for unique foods, we definitely have to mention the homemade kimchi,
Sea asparagus (which I personally like either sauteed in garlic butter or tossed in a salad with some balsamic vinegar),
Vegan Pâté (OK, I need to let you know that I’ve never been much of a vegan and probably would not last more than 3 days without my animal products..but this pate was so delicious! Big ups to the tomato flavor..yum!)
incredibly unique chocolates (I dare you to try their blue cheese chocolate!),
beer infused artisan-crafted sausages (uhm, hello! Sounds like the perfect summer BBQ combo),
and honey for your hunny. (I’ve recently said goodbye to sugar and have adopted (vanilla) honey into my family.).
With all these vendors being local, you can’t help but feel some sense of community when browsing through the market. Many of the farmers are now organic and serving things up as fresh as they can get.
Here are a few more pictures for you to drool over while you wait for Wednesday to draw near.
So definitely drop by your nearest market (there are five locations for the summer) for your groceries.
The Trout Lake and Kitsilano locations have the Bicycle Valet for the energy conscious as well
Don’t forget to bring those reusable shopping bags!
