Hey look, a food court. I rarely eat at food courts now for a variety of reasons, but there was good reason for this visit to Lansdowne Centre mall. Taco Luis is famous in Richmond for cheap Tex-Mex food, with (so I’ve heard) numerous Kwantlen students flooding the food court at lunch for a quick and easy lunch. In fact, some people will cross a bridge just to eat here. Taco Luis is so popular that they’ve even opened up a second location at Oakridge Mall.
I’ve always walked past it on the times I’ve been in Lansdowne Centre, but never patroned because I had already eaten. Since Val wanted a quick cheap dinner before dodgeball, I suggested we meet at Taco Luis.
We placed our order and the lady heated up the tortillas and started wrapping. While waiting for her to finish, a guy came out, who I presume is the owner, and started another customers. His demeanour is a bit quirky and strange, but not in that creepy kind of way. While waiting for the tater tots to finish frying, he told me he hadn’t seen me in a while, to which I replied “I’ve never been here before“. Since I was a “Taco Luis virgin”, he gave me some more tater tots. Nice.
Val ordered a 7″ Soft Taco (Chicken) $2.20 with all the toppings. The chicken was well seasoned with a bit of spicy kick to it. A hand made taco for $2~ that’s not assembled in the back room? Yea I’m looking at you Taco Time, stop toying with my food back there.
I got the 12″ special. No, not that other kind of 12″ special, but a beef burrito with all the toppings (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, jalapeno, banana peppers, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, salsa), tater tots (or mexifries like how Mexicali calls them) and a 16oz fountain pop. All this for $6.79!
While eating the burrito, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Mexicali’s Beef Redondo Roll Up. Taco Luis is quite similar, but just slightly more expensive and with a soft shell instead. Chock full of ingredients, this kept me full for the entire night.. that is until I got major study munchies.
Final thoughts: I like it.
