To celebrate finals last semester, my classmates and I went to Boathouse at the New Westminster Quay for some drinks and more importantly, oysters. At every Boathouse location, oysters are $1 each during happy hour 3-6pm, and may vary according to season and availability, so check their fresh sheet. I think the two that were available for this visit were Kisshu and Kumamoto oysters.
Originally, we were supposed to go out to Rodney’s but since it was farther all the way in Yaletown and more expensive (okay, not really that much more, just $0.50 more) we stuck with Boathouse. One catch is that a minimum $2.99 beverage must be purchased, which is easy to do as they have $4.99 drink specials everyday. I started out with 5 oysters and a Granville Island Honey Lager.
What I did not appreciate was the attitude our server was giving us though, she really did not make it seem like she wanted to serve us as well, and even bitched me out (as politely as possible) when I asked if the bar could make a Dark & Stormy since I spotted Gosling behind their bar.
Reason was because I asked her first and she didn’t even know what it was, but said she would check for me. Nope, they couldn’t. Then I went up to the bartender later and asked if he had anything similar to ginger beer, and he said he didn’t. He must have told the server because the next time she came around to take drink orders she turned to me and said “Oh and I already TOLD you we can’t make you that drink!” …bitch.
As people started to leave, we decided to go for a second round. 5 more oysters to finish off the afternoon. Decent, but I’m no oyster expert. Not very “fishy” as some may say, but I’m pretty used to seafood smells so I actually didn’t notice. The two sauces they had (vinaigrette & marinara?) were good, but wasn’t really required. Some of these shells looked way too clean to have been freshly shucked, I wonder how many are re-used and the oysters simply deposited in them when ordered?
