Rinconcito Salvadoreno

I’ve been meaning to try out Rinconcito for a LONG time now, but I was thwarted many times.

From the time I tried to take Yen of OMNOMics there but we found that they AREN’T open for lunch, to the random times I was on Commercial but had already eaten.

So after yet another night of dodgeball with VDL, we went to eat. They are CASH ONLY so make sure you’ve got some with you. There are some banks within a couple blocks of the restaurant though. Now after meeting Yen last night for yet again, another DOV event thanks to GourmetFury, (see past DOV we had together at Hidden) I felt even more guilty at not having this up in a timely manner..

Didn’t try anyone else’s food, so I’ll just talk bout mine. I had 3 pupusas at $3 each (I think, the price might be up/down a quarter)

Loroco is a common name for a vine called Fernaldia Pandurata that has edible flowers, known as Flor de Loroco.  This is actually the first time I’ve eaten these, but I’ve seen them before. I don’t know about you, but from what I know about food and have eaten in my life, it’s not a very common thing to be eating flowers. I can recall the last time I ate flowers, and that was at Market by Jean-Georges where there was some crystallized violets in the dessert.

Thoughts on the pupusas here? Good, but definitely not packing as much filling and not enough curtido is given. Over at El Caracol (my personal favorite for pupusas), they jam pack it with cheese, beans, you name it. Then you get all the salsa and curtido you want! They make’m fresh when you order, so if you’re in a rush or just can’t wait, call ahead so you can go and pick up. That’s what we sometimes do and get them to-go.

So Vancouver, are there any other places to get some killer pupusas? Perhaps your friends mom makes them at home, or you know of another restaurant? Please let me know, I’ve now got an unhealthy craving for these things….
