Gawwwwwwd I just went to a Mamak tasting event hosted by Chowtimes and I felt so guilty telling others that I write a blog but in reality I haven’t been active for about a months time.
Hungry after hours spent looking at the Body World exhibit at Science World with my classmates, I was tasked with finding something to eat. I recalled there being a nuba nearby up at Main and 3rd, so we walked the short distance south towards it. I’d dropped by frequently to pick up wraps while I had work in the area during late spring, so it was still somewhat fresh in my mind.
With both the exterior and interior awash in a palette of light pastel colours, Nuba stands out amongst the boring gray warehouses and empty storefronts in this industrial area.
Having frequented the Nuba located at Hastings & Cambie when I was going to school in Gastown, I knew all the good stuff such as najib’s special, falafel pita wraps, and the lamb kafta, I wanted to try something different.
Eggplant? Do you have eggplants? Oh cool. I’ll have the eggplant stew then. $10.75 got me the plate below.
cubes of eggplant stewed w/ onions, tomatoes and chickpeas. served w/ taboulleh, hummus, salad, hot sauce, pita & brown rice or roasted potatoes
Thick, mushy, and .. lacking in flavour by itself. This is something that I feel really needs to be eaten in conjunction with the other items on the plate, otherwise it’s just not going to leave your mouth feeling happy. Overall it was decent, but next time I’ll stick with my favourites.
