Food and photography in Vancouver, BC
Wooooo this is nearly a month old, Dec 29th was the day I visited No.1 Shanghai Cuisine because we went for Kevin’s 21st birthday!
The interior is not a typical Chinese restaurant setup. There are booth seats and strange decorations…most likely remnants of the lounge that used to reside here. Like true Chinese business owners, they probably decided to save money on redecoration costs and leave the place as it.
I had no hand in ordering anything, so taking a picture of the print out of what was ordered is handy, both at the time and later when I would post about it. There’s just no way I would remember the names of some dishes if I didn’t have this to refer to! This is going to be a picture intensive post with very little text for description because I’m lazy and honestly can’t remember much about the dishes…
From near to far, Braised Gluten w/ MR (what’s MR?!), Chicken w/ Wine Sauce and Fried Vegetarian Roll.
Shanghai Style Smoked Fish
Shanghai Style Juicy Pork Bun, or more commonly known as… Xiao Long Bao.
Edit, as requested by Melody, some detail about the XLB. Far as I can remember, the skin was thin but held its contents well, in this case, hot scalding meat soup. To date, I still think the best XLB I’ve had (in the Lower Mainland) are at Shanghai River.
Spare Ribs w/ Vinegar, kind of like sweet and sour ribs.
Steamed Chicken Soup. Oh this was good, and this was only a small serving for the 8 of us! I would come back and just order this for myself.
Braised Lamb in Hot Pot
Fried Glutinous Rice Cakes
Smoked Duck
Lazy post from me, check. It’s also cause I’m not a fan of writing about Chinese restaurants cause there’s SO much to write about.

Nice pics! Personally I’m not a fan of Shanghai cuisine. The flavours aren’t that great and I always feel like I’m a peasant eating in the countryside in China. Also, some of these places need to have servers that can speak English fluently!

Went there last night to try the steamed chicken soup you posted. It was really good and big serving for 2 people. We had to take home half of the soup. Lots of good stuff in there like chicken, shanghai wonton and Chinese ham. I’m eating the leftover soup right now for breakfast. I just put in some udon noodles. Yum!

@ Gary, what is it about eating Shanghai food that makes you feel like a peasant?
As for the servers..ah that’s just the way it is with Chinese restaurants.

@Jonnek, long time no comment! Why is that?
Were they wontons or dumplings? I think they were dumplings. I love having dumplings in soup as its not the norm.

Hi Kevin, I haven’t commented lately but I always visit your site. As for the soup, I think you’re right. It’s more of a dumpling with lots of chives inside. I said wonton because that’s what I read in their menu.
