Locus (Main & King Ed)

I caught up with an old friend during the holidays and we met for lunch at Locus. First impressions really do count, because every time I pass by it I think it’s some meet up for goth punk rockers. That’ll teach me though to judge a book, or rather, restaurant by its cover because this place surprised me! Excuse the google street view, but I forgot to take a picture of the exterior to show you what I mean. The bus is also in the way, but… yea.

Locus is a rarity, as they UPDATE their webpage everyday with the daily specials, both lunch and dinner. In this time of technology and web, I think it’s even more so important that business keep in touch with the general public, and that usually means a) owning a website b) updates. Having Twitter is one, but for the less hip with social media, keeping your page updated will do just as well.

Arrived past 1230, and we had to wait. I can see the place is clearly a favorite of the locals, many reluctant to relinquish their prized window seats. However, we didn’t have to wait long and were seated just behind the window seats, which I was hoping for as the back of the restaurant is quite dark. I didn’t even have to look at the menu as I already decided what I wanted before setting foot in Locus.

Starting off with bread, the butter was intoxicating. I’m not sure what was in it as I forgot to ask the server, I just kept eating it. It was slightly spicy, so I’m thinking paprika? No idea what else would be in though… oh yea, and it was SOFT. Important, serve soft butter with the bread- heck, keep the bread soft too, otherwise don’t serve it! Yea, I’m looking at you Market.

Holy did this eggs benedict taste goood. A light hollandaise sauce over medium poached eggs on top of vegetable chili, red onions, spinach, and half an English muffin. Egg was poached perfectly with a little bit of runny yolk, which I sopped up with the roasted potatoes.

Such a little plate I thought when it came, but after having it settle in my stomach, I was full like a fat kid left unattended in Charlie’s Chocolate Factory.

BENNY SPECIAL – $11
Vegetable chili, spinach, red onion, poached free range eggs, english muffin & hollandaise.
Served with mixed organic greens and yukon gold potatoes.

I didn’t ask my friend for a bite of her sandwich because to be honest, I didn’t want to share any bit of my benedict. That was how frigging awesome it was.

SOUP & SANDWICH – $12
Bison eye of round thinly sliced, with spicy sage, fennel & tomato spread, lettuce & red onion on a toasted baguette.
Served with mixed organic greens and your choice of soup (
Ham & Vegetable Stew)

I finished my plate pretty quickly so I ordered a beer while I waited for my friend to finish. Daily specials for beers too, 4/pint, 12/pitcher. Very cheap for the stuff they have on tap. I had myself a Stanley Park 1896 Amber. They also dropped off another basket of bread along with my beer, not sure if it was a mistake or that they thought I needed the bread to soak up the alcohol, but I sure didn’t inquire about it.

I am incredibly jealous of people who live in this area of Main because of the diversity and choice they have in restaurants. Yea, that means all of you SoMa hipsters.
