Fried Chicken Fridays @ Fuel Restaurant

If you’re up to date with any of Vancouver’s food industry, you should know by now that Fuel on W4th is closing at the end of this month, Nov 29th to be exact.

Our 3 year anniversary is fast approaching and we have truly enjoyed the time we have had taking care of you all.  Our ultimate goal is to see you all more often, and in order to achieve that, we have decided to make a significant change to our landscape here at Fuel.

Sunday November 29th will be our last service as Fuel Restaurant. We will close for two days and re-open for business on December 2nd as a neighborhood restaurant and bar specializing in Casual Northwest Cuisine. Our philosophy towards quality ingredients and impeccable service will remain paramount. We simply want to offer these things to you at a more affordable price.

Not caught up with the food indutstry? Well may I suggest you read the following sites… Scout Magazine, UrbanDiner, Kitsilano and Edible British Columbia. Local foodie Karen of TinyBites has also posted about 3 things she’ll miss about Fuel.  Come back when you finish reading, mmkay? Please?

With a rare 5 day long weekend thanks to Remembrance day last week, I knew it would be my only chance to try the Fried Chicken Fridays @ Fuel.

Fuel’s Fried Chicken Fridays is a $19.50 combo that includes 3 pieces of buttermilk battered chicken, coleslaw, a biscuit, housemade gravy, and a choice of R&B Lager or Pale Ale.

I arrived shortly after 12pm, and I almost didn’t get it! Now that would have sucked. I knew I should have phoned in to make a reservation since the amount of chicken prepared each week is limited, I kept putting it off, aka…I slept most of my days away.

The group in front of me had reservations, but not everyone wanted the chicken. Timidly, I asked Katherine (below looking down @ the plates) if there would be any orders left if they didn’t take them all. Thankfully she said yes! So I sat at the bar. By myself.  Oh yea..this is the first time I’ve eaten alone, which is something I hate doing. I couldn’t find anyone to join me, mainly because they had school or work. Or they just say that…tear tear.

Sitting at the bar by myself, I had the best seat in the house. Watching the chefs prepare the chicken, double dipping them in the buttermilk batter for extra crunchiness…mmm. Finally my plate was ready!

I couldn’t believe the size of these suckers. I had a drumstick, thigh & a wing. The biscuit this week was jalapeno. The coleslaw was a light vinaigrette-y type, not the creamy kind. The biscuit could have had a little more kick to it from the jalapeno, but it was light and buttery. Not heavy at all.

What’s this Japanese comic page doing underneath the chicken? A little random…

My last piece, the drumstick, took a while to eat. Partly because I didn’t want the meal to end, and because I was starting to feel satisfied. I gently tugged at the meat, and it all just came off the stick. Sooooo delicious. The chicken was so moist and delicious. Some pieces I just had to savour by itself, but when combined with the gravy (which I finished, of course), it was a little bit of a foodgasm in my mouth.

I’d like to say that it blows LA Chicken out of the water, well, coop house, but they can’t even be put in the same league as each other.

Off to the washroom to clean up my hands. Their sink is neat. Hmm..taking pictures of washrooms. Not a coincidence, I swear.

For $19.50+tax&tip, it definitely was not a cheap lunch, especially for a student like me, but it’s nice to splurge once in a while..especially if there will be no more Fried Chicken Fridays @ Fuel.

So, will you be going to Fuel before they close? Only two more Fridays left this month!

A foodgasm eh? Is that why you went to the washroom? I’m not sure if I had one of those when I had the fried chicken there. But it was indeed good. Shows how fine dining establishments can one up something as simple as fried chicken.

Foodgasm is good. I’m sure you’ve had one before!

OK, what is the deal with taking pictures of the washroom, ah? Once was OK but twice???? Anyway, it seems I am about the only person who hasn’t been to Fuel for their chicken. What can I say, I work on Fridays! I guess I only have one more chance…
