Jazmin Villarreal and Felix Maristany Take Home Gold at Winter Ales and Fare – Granville Island Brewing and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Winter Ale Cooking Competition

Vancouver, BC – Granville Island Brewing and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts are happy to announce the winners of their 1st annual “Winter Ales and Fare – Granville Island Brewing (GIB) and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (PICA) Winter Ale Cooking Competition”, that took place Tuesday November 3rd on Granville Island. Jazmin Villarreal and Felix Maristany of PICA took home first place for the gumbo with chorizo and seafood, and rice pudding.

Teams consisting of one culinary and one pastry student, worked together to create an entrée and a dessert item using Granville Island Brewing’s Lions Winter Ale. Competitors had 45 minutes to race around the Granville Market to gather core ingredients for their dishes.  They were given one more hour for cooking, preparation and mise en place, and 15 minutes to bring all necessary elements to the GIB Taproom for final presentation to the judges.

Judges Chef Julian Bond, Executive Chef, PICA, Vern Lambourne, GIB Brewmaster, Chester Carey, cicerone (beer sommelier) and Barry MacDonald from The Team 1040, tasted and scored teams’ creations based on use of the beer ingredient, presentation, originality, taste, and plating demonstration.

“Our Lions Winter Ale is definitely the local’s favourite winter beer, and I’m excited that we have this opportunity to showcase the versatility of the beer as a unique ingredient. All of our competing teams crafted mouthwatering entrees and desserts that can be enjoyed throughout the winter season,” says Vern Lambourne, GIB’s brewmaster.

“We’re excited to be partnering with our neighbour, Granville Island Brewing, for this great competition promoting their seasonal beers.  As a culinary school offering a part-time beer course, we recognize the importance of not only pairing wines with dishes, but everyone’s favourite barley juice as well,” says PICA Executive Chef Julian Bond. “Congratulations to the winners!”

Jazmin and Felix will have their Lions Winter Ale creations featured on the PICA restaurant menu, and in its bakeshop. Each winning team member received a prize pack of GIB goodies for their efforts.

You know….GIB…you sell your brews quite well..hows about sending over some so I can review it?  I’ve never had Winters Ale or any of your other seasonal ones for that matter…..;)

On a side note, I do appreciate the communication and involvement you have shown and given to me, it does mean quite a bit!

    I received the same email… Yesterday… :???:

If it is the same Lion’s Winter Ale I had last year/earlier this year, it is quite interesting brew. Not too bitter and, the most interesting part, it has a hint of vanilla.
