CHOP – Richmond

2009

Went out to Chop for a friends birthday. The location isn’t exactly ideal or easy to find, and will have some scratching their heads as to how they’ll get there.

Chop-1

I’ve never been to Chop before, and so my first impression was “woo wee, fancccccy and pretty“. Everything at Chop is very nice, it’s like they’re feeding your eyes before you even start eating. The outdoor patio has big leather seats with fan/lamps above, and a HUGE fireplace.  Of course, we came at the beginning of this month so I don’t think anyone would want to sit outside.

The interior is even better, it’s dim, which I hate in restaurants, and had many different parts. To the main lounge area where we sat (I think..) you walk through this James Bond-esque tunnel, and the first thing you’ll see is this huge cylindrical wine fridge. From floor to ceiling. Then there’s a room just to your right which has a whole bunch of different things, it made me think of Knights of the Round Table.

Chop-4

I’ll be honest and frank here, Chop is not cheap. You can already tell by the decor, ambiance, the type of service here where they will continuously push drinks and “appies” onto you. Since it was our friends birthday, some people arrived late and we had to endure this pushiness from the waitress while we waited.

We ordered a couple beers, which were shown NO WHERE on any of their menus. They have a very extensive wine and cocktail menu, but if you were looking for beer, no dice. They have no beer specials, no pitchers, and guess how much a “pint” of beer was? $6-7. Anyways, my table got tired of waiting and the other table had already started with appetizers, so we just put in our orders. Kevin, Victor and I all got The Chop Burger, $13.50, “Our steak burger with aged white cheddar, double smoked bacon and chipotle aioli on a house-made kaiser, served with our Chop cut fries“. It’s not because I love burgers (I do) but because everything else is ridiculously expensive and overpriced.

Victor and Kevin subbed their fries for scalloped potatoes instead. It was very dense and heavy and looked like a tart instead of potatoes.

Chop-7

The patty was almost an inch thick, and extremely juicy and moist. What a surprise for only $13.50 and at a steakhouse. This definitely goes on my list of top burgers I’ve had in Metro Vancouver.

Chop-9

Oh yea, our complimentary bread came when we ASKED for it. Ah….

Chop-10

I gotta say, this Prime Rib looks mighty impressive. I think this was a Medium, so $26.

Chop-11

My bill for the night. I would definitely return for the burger. The service was decent, but they certainly remind of me other chain restaurants like Earls, Moxies, Cactus Club, Joeys where they seem to be hired for some better and bigger attributes.
