Chu Kiang Chinese Restaurant

Before you read any of this, I would like you to know that this is my friends parents restaurant and the meal was free. With that in mind, I don’t think there was any bias with having been served better food or service. Just letting you all know.

So, I’ve been bugging Eeyore (that will now be her nickname) to invite me over for dinner one day at her parents restaurant.  Originally it was supposed to happen in the last week before school started, but I went and got my wisdom teeth taken out…so eating anything but congee was out of the question. Chu Kiang is located at the small plaza at Knight & 49th.

Ordering dishes was a little difficult, as we all couldn’t decide on what to order, or lack of decision making. I only had one stipulation, and it was that we have real Chinese food, not Western-Chinese food.  Szechuan Beef Noodle in Soup. This was the spiciest of the four dishes we ordered, I think, but it was by no means an intolerable or painful spicy. More like a “hey, i’m tickling your tastebuds” spicy. Anyways, it was a little strange to eat this because I’m used to eating the Taiwanese Beef Noodle in Soup (like Beefy Beef Noodle, Accord Food House, Taiwan Beef Noodle King, Huangs Beef Noodle, Cabin 5555, Dinesty and No.1 Beef Noodle House). It had plenty of soft and chewy beef brisket chunks, yum.

Hot and spicy chicken wings.  There’s something about the batter on these chicken wings that makes them so damn addicting. It’s nothing like Church’s, KFC, or even LA Chicken.  Crunchy on the outside but so moist inside, the spicy bits of garlic/chili/carrots/etc it was tossed in really make this dish.  I think the perfect accompaniment to these wings would have to be a cold beer. Almost makes me want to not go for wings at Flying Beaver and have these instead. Almost.

Grand mothers bean curd. I’ve never heard this dish name before because I’m used to seeing it and ordering it as Ma Po Tofu.  For me, it wasn’t spicy at all. A very mild hint of spicy was what I tasted. Not to say it’s not bad, it was well prepared and the tofu chunks were firm and not falling apart.

Fried pork with green beans (hot). Again, not hot enough, but that’s just my preference. For the price, I think it’s around $9, you get a huge amount.

Of course, to go with all this we had rice. Feels really weird to eat Chinese food without rice. The place really is the definition of a family restaurant, as aunts uncles and cousins came in to eat at the same time, along with what I’m pretty sure are regular customers.
