The Latin Summer Fest always occurs on a Sunday in August, just like the Taiwan Day Festival. In its 9th year, I can’t really remember what it was like before, but apparently I’ve been with my mom when I was younger, and it was the same just smaller and indoors.
The most important part of the festival.. the food! What you see below are churros, but they aren’t deep fried on site. The stand belonged to Los Guerreros Mexican Food.
In Spain, they are usually hollow inside and eaten for breakfast, while in the Latin-American countries, you will typically see a filling inside, such as dulce de leche, vanilla or chocolate inside. I took a picture first and decided I would come back later, but when I came back, there were no more =(!
There were a couple stands that sold pupusas, which proved to be very popular with the crowd. One of the lineups must have taken at least 20 minutes …
Empanada de Carne, from the Chilean stand.
For $4.00, it was yummy but obviously festival priced. I’d say $3 would be a more reasonable price for this, but it’s not a big deal.
My mom was curious what sopaipilla was, and so got one. It’s a sweet pastry, deep fried pumpkin cake.
While I didn’t really taste the pumpkin, the texture and taste did make me think of Green Onion Pancakes.. haha.
Yuca con curtido y chicharron. Sorry, this picture doesn’t really show it well, but the big golden brown chunks are deep fried yuca, the pink coleslaw is curtido, and the chicharron is just somewhere in there.
This wasn’t a lot of food, so my mom sent me to get some taquitos while she sat down in the shaded eating area. I waited 20 minutes in line…ugh.
While I was waiting for my order of taquitos, I got to watch a lady make pupusas! First a little indent is made in the ball of dough for the cheese…
Then the beans and meat filling goes in next.
Finally, the order of taquitos. For $10, we got 6 of them topped with chili, cheese and salsa.
Oh god, just looking at this now makes me hungry…
I never knew there were so many flavors available from Jarritos!
Since I’m a fan of all sour things, I had to try the lime. Silly me for thinking it would be sour-ish, like lemonade,. Nope, it was still sweet pop.
Some other drinks that they had from other countries,
I didn’t take much pictures of the festival itself, I was focused on the food, but I had a laugh about this. The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival.. and they had to put a picture of a Luchadore!
Some more pictures that I’m too lazy to caption…
Hope you enjoyed this post, and for a different perspective check out KimHo’s post.
