What’s the cheapest wings specials you’ve ever seen? $0.25? Maybe even $0.15? What about if I told you there’s a place that has them at $0.10? There’s just a catch..it’s in New Westminster, and in a bit of a sketchy area (well in my opinion it is), the New Westminster Skytrain Station. You can see it when you leave the station, it’s called 57 Below Bar + Liquor Store.
I like that their site has the menus posted, and you can check out what they have before arriving. Like most wing specials, such as Legends or Flying Beaver, the special is only effective if you purchase a drink, be it pop, beer, or whatever. There are 8 flavors available, standards such as honey garlic, hot, sweet thai chili, salt & pepper, teriyaki, bbq, and two other I’ve never seen before, dry cajun, and jerk.
So a minimum order of wings is 12, and I got two baskets, Honey Garlic and Jerk. I was curious as to what Jerk tasted like. It was salty, spicy, and peppery. Not what I was expecting, so I only had two of them. The wings were decent, although some were a little drier than should be (read: over fried) but I had to keep in mind that these are 10 cents each and so lowered my expectations accordingly. The Honey Garlic was a little too sticky and sweet than I’ve had, but it wasn’t bad. Jeff’s Thai Chili was surprisingly good, and the hot was average.
As you can see above, an order of wings ($1.20) is cheaper than my drink, a coke ($2.95). Although the atmosphere may not be the greatest, especially just outside the door, it’s an experience that I think I will rack up as another “been there, done that”.
