Remember my post about cherries in my back yard? Well, I also have a plum tree in the front, Mirabelle plums to be exact. The plums are a vivid yellow, which is completely different from the normally purple plums you’ll find in our stores in Vancouver. A lot of my friends have never seen yellow plums, and always ask where to get it and are surprised to find out it’s from my house!
When I took these pictures, they were mostly still green and just starting to ripen and turn yellow. The leaves, although small in size, cover many of them quite well. The tree and its branches almost takes on the shape of an umbrella.
A size comparison with my hand to show you how big the plums are.
A days worth of picking. This is only at the start of when the plums started to ripen. They’re all off the tree now, but I think the final amount is probably 3 times what you see in this picture. Majority of them have been given away to friends, eaten, and the rest are just sitting in the fridge.
When fully ripened, the skin is still slightly sour, but the flesh is so sweet and juicy. Seeing how much fruit we had this year, I may think of selling some next year!
Not sure if I want to attempt to make anything with these. I have an idea though, if you want a basket full of these plums, I have two conditions.
1. You must make something to eat with it, be it a dessert, jam, pie, etc.
2. I get to sample what you made! =]
** If you write a blog, you post up your recipe and link me. If you don’t have a blog, I will post it for you with pictures (if you want).
Now here’s how to enter this contest, each counts as one entry. Yes, you can have two chances of winning!
1. Leave a comment here telling me what you would make.
2. Retweet this post with the hashtag #604foodplums. Click this link to RT. You don’t have to RT the same, just include the hashtag so I can count entries.
Contest closes August 17th, 2009 at 2:30pm and I will draw a winner at random from all the comments and tweets shortly after.
EDIT: After thinking about it, the plums may be way too ripe for cooking, so I’m not sure if I will enforce the conditions. The winner can decide whether or not it would be worth it to try to make something.
