Cattle Cafe is relatively new, and I went with my mom one night for dinner. It is at the most Western end of Alexandra Road, and so most people probably wouldn’t go that direction.
Surprise, a Chinese restaurant that has a website! It’s not bad actually, check it out, www.cattlecafe.ca. The menu is on the site also, but could use some navigational work.
The menu is nicely laid out, nice pictures and easy to understand. Most HK cafes all do the same things, offer the good old standbys, baked pork chop on spaghetti, baked seafood on rice, curries, etc.. and this they do offer.
To stand out amongst other HK cafes along this stretch of road, they offer a mix&match of noodles. You choose your soup base, toppings & type of noodles. Base is 2 toppings, and for only $7.25, you get a big bowl. Additional toppings are $1.00 each, and $1.00 for cold drinks.
Not really feeling like noodles that night, I didn’t get it but my mom did. She had the fish soup (no MSG guarantee!), mushrooms, and a tofu.. not sure if it’s tofu puffs or fish tofu. Sorry that I didn’t put something down to show how big the bowl is, but I think for the price it’s definitely a good value. I sampled a bit, and the soup is really good..and I liked the variety of mushrooms they put in.
It came with some sauce, spicy prawn sauce? Yummy though, I put some into my own food.
I got the Baked Seafood on Rice, and it was pricey compared to most other places, coming in at $8.95. It was also pretty small. That said, I like that they made an effort with it, they put some dill and grated parmesan cheese on top, to fancy it up a bit. I counted 2 scallops, 2 shrimps, plenty of imitation crab meat, 3 pieces of fish, and 2 octopus rings. I wouldn’t order it again because I was still hungry after I finished it, and my moms bowl of noodles looked good (& cheaper!).
One last thing about their drinks, they make bubbletea and etc, but they’re super expensive. A large is $4.50, and it’s $0.50 for pearls/etc! That’s preposterous, charging $5 for a bubble tea. Not sure how they can justify it, but I’m not wasting $5 for a drink like that.
