Screamers at Danny's Market & Pizza, Richmond BC

I saw Yum-O-Rama’s post about Screamers and followed it to the post on Five Loaves.  Screamers are slushies with soft-serve ice cream, something that I hope catches on at other convenience stores.  I’ve read that the Husky at King Ed and Oak has something similar. Can anyone confirm that? There’s a location downtown that Five Loaves has also blogged about called Baguette Time.  They also look like the Qrush at Qoola, which is their fresh frozen yogurt with their featured flavor slush.

With the on and off hot summer days we’ve been having, it certainly got my interest, even if it meant driving to Richmond for it.  The location certainly isn’t central to much, but that hasn’t deterred me from going three times already…

The first was when I bugged some friends from Richmond to take me.  They thought it was amusing that I was making such a big deal about getting these Screamers, but hey, it’s something new!  To them, it was nothing new or exciting as they’re used to getting it all the time.

On my first visit, we made it just before they closed, which was 1030pm on Sunday. We even had to phone and double check if they were still open as we were rushing there.

Got a couple to share with other friends, there’s two medium Cream Soda in the back, a small Coke on the left and a small Sour Green Apple in the front.  After I took this picture, there was a guy behind me who asked if I was going to put it on the net.  That kind of caught me off guard, but since I was in a happy mood after finally getting my hands on one of these Screamers, I said “Of course!” and handed him one of my mini-Moo cards.

I had the Sour Green Apple, and I also got to try a bit of the other flavors. The Cream Soda was good, and it tasted like a creamsicle.  The Coke was just really sweet, and that’s partly the reason why I chose to go with Sour Green Apple for mine.  I’m not a big fan of sweet things, and I can’t eat much of it. I also figured that the sour slush would compliment the ice cream perfectly, which it did! These are also a lot of fun to eat, as you can scoop, slurp and mix them continuously.

I went back last Thursday, as I had a craving that just had to be satisfied.  I dragged a friend to come with me to get one, and I noticed the specials this time around.  Since I had just had dinner, I didn’t feel like having anything.  My friend got a slice of pizza and a samosa along with her screamer, but both food items were pretty disappointing and bland. My advice, stick with the screamers.

I got my Sour Green Apple again, since I figured why bother with a good thing. My friend tried the Blueberry, which I found to be super sweet also.

Not pictured is my third visit just this Sunday…this time I had Crush Lime. It wasn’t super sweet as the other flavors I’ve tried so far, so I would probably try that again.  Three visits in one week, I think that says something… go try it and let me know what you think. :)

Is it self-serve? I live pretty close to Danny’s but I havent tried that myself. We used to buy garlic bread there that were similar to Little Ceasar’s crazy bread. It was good. Anyway I’ll drop by and get the Crush lime screamer.

It’s not self serve, you pick your flavor and he makes your drink. One layer of ice cream on the bottom, slush, then topped off with another layer of ice cream on top.
Little Caesars crazy bread is so good, but it doesn’t take a lot to figure out it’s really simple to make…

Went yesterday for my first ever screamer. I ordered the green apple screamer based on your comment. There is a sign in the dispenser that its the last day for green apple. They are phasing it out. bohoooo. I actually liked it.

kwu!
you HAVE to go to baguette time! i’ve never had a screamer there, but their sandwiches are SOOO GOOD.
especially the turkey one with cranberry sauce and pesto mayo. mmm.
they’re about $7-8 for a large sandwich packed full of YUM.

i used to go there all the time when i worked in that area. i introduced FK to them, and he lurves them, too :)
mmm just thinking about it now makes me want one.
they’re at davie and bute, right next to cafe luxy (a decent-ish italian place)

you should go and try ‘em! and the guys that run the place are super nice.

shoot, i’m hungry.

I went there yesterday and I was a bit disappointed. I’m really glad that I got the smallest size possible. The ice cream had bits of what I’m guessing is otherwise heavy cream or gelatin (probably not). I got the cream soda screamer, it was good during the first sip, but after that it was downhill from there. I think it was the bits that I tasted that turned me off. I’m better off going to 7-11 and buying an ice cream from McDonalds.

True, they have been around for a while and even in other places like the BC Interior.. but hey, they’re new to me and I thought I’d share it with everyone. :)

That’s a shame, it’s my favorite flavour! Wonder if I can convince him to keep it….

Hey Meghan,

Sorry to hear bout your experience. :( Strange, chunky ice cream?

Now the question is, would you mix the ice cream from McD’s with your 7-11 slurpee? :p

Haha, yes I would mix the ice cream from McD’s with a slurpee from 7-11! I’m into making nojitos at the moment, so I thought trying out a screamer would’ve been a good change.
